Semen Collection Instructions
Before beginning the process, you and your partner may opt to have a semen analysis
run in order to determine the quality including the number, motility and morphology
of the sample. This is not a requirement however, if you opt not to take part in
this testing, you will need to sign a waiver stating your choice not to do the prior
testing. Semen testing is covered by most insurance, and we can order the test from
our office to any local lab. If you do not have insurance, the test runs anywhere
from $100-300.
For providing a specimen for gender selection processes, you partner should have
abstained from any ejaculation a full 72 hours prior to giving the sample. This
will insure the best quality sample for insemination.
The actual technique for the collection of the sample is very important. The best
way to obtain a sample is through masturbation. It is the easiest way to collect
the entire ejaculate into the sterile collection container. It is very important
to collect the entire sample, especially the first part of the ejaculate as it contains
most of the sperm. Please do not use any lubricants, lotions, gels, etc for the
collection of the sample as these items will alter the sample. While a sterile collection
container is best for collecting the sample, a disposable Tupperware container may
be used as well. You may request sterile collection containers from Jessica before
the day of your collection, if your husband willnot be collecting at our office.
If collection by masturbation is not the preferred method, you may also use a sterile
collection condom. This method will allow you to collect your sample during normal
intercourse. It is important that the whole sample be contained within the condom
and then placed in the sterile collection container. Do not attempt to remove sample
from condom, simply place condom into container. Be careful not to place condom
in container so that the sample may leak from condom all over container. Try to
place condom where the sample is isolated in the tip of the condom where it will
remain through your transport of the sample. The specimen must be kept at room temperature
and promptly brought to our office within 30-40 minutes. Sperm samples can be adversely
affected by heat, air-conditioning and extreme temperatures. It is best to keep
sample near body temperature on the way to the office and this can be achieved by
placing sample cup in between your legs. You can request these collection condoms
from Jessica prior to the day of sample collection.

PREPARATION FOR GIVING SAMPLE: In order to for your husband to give the best
semen sample the day (or 2 days) of your procedure, it is important to follow these
guidelines. The best sample will be given after 72 hours of abstinence from masturbation
and intercourse. So try your best to time the last sexual activity as close to 72
hours before the services are to take place. A little more or less will not hurt.
“Saving” a sample up and not having intercourse or masturbation for more than 5
days before services can actually lead to an inferior sample, so do not think that
if he does not masturbate of have intercourse for a longer period, that it will
be improving his count. It won’t! Your husband may bring in visual materials, magazines,
IPad, laptop computer if needed to assist in the sample giving process. We do provide
magazines, a collection room and sterile collection cups.

A semen analysis will be done on each sample of the sperm that is provided for gender
selection procedures. The cost of this semen analysis is included in your package
price.
It cannot be stressed enough the importance of protected intercourse before and after
insemination (starting cycle day 7 until one week after insemination). Any unprotected
intercourse can result in an unrealized pregnancy that will prohibit your gender
selection procedure from working. If you have unprotected intercourse too close
to your ovulation day, you should opt to wait a cycle before doing the gender selection
as we will not be able to determine which ejaculate was the impregnating ejaculate.
In addition, it is so very important that your partner abstain for the minimum of
72 hours before insemination in order not to deplete the semen reserve.
NOTE: It is to be known, that certain samples of semen may be of low/no count, low
motility, bad morphology, etc. and other circumstances such as a viscous sample.
In these cases, you will be consulted as to your options to move forward with the
gender selection procedure, to wait a month and retry procedure, to seek care of
a urologist, or to submit sample to an independent lab for semen analysis before
moving forward with gender selection services. If sample can be corrected the same
day as in viscous samples allowing you to proceed with gender selection services
that day, you will be consulted on that as well. As Gender Select can not be held
accountable for a bad semen sample, a $200.00 fee will be kept for that day if the
client decides not to move forward with gender selection services that month as
to cover the semen analysis that was completed to determine the poor quality of
the sample. If you/your partner are uncertain of one's fertility, please ask for
help before moving forward with services until that question can be answered/addressed
properly. Please note that medication additions/changes, drug use, alcohol use,
smoking, frequent intercourse/masturbation, hot baths, hottubs, and other environmental
and health factors can negatively affect semen sample quality and it is client (and
client's partner's) full responsibility to understand, address and inform Gender
Select of any such issue. A man can have a normal sample one month and a bad sample
the next. Some issues can be resolved.
